About
Hey everybody, my name is Kia and I’m about to embark on the next major step towards becoming a physician, Medical School! As an undergraduate, I dedicated many sleepless nights in order to get to this point, and I’m so excited to finally start this next chapter of my life. In a few days I’m going to start my first year at Drexel University College of Medicine, and I would like you all to get a peak into my new life, and share my account of the day to day life of a 1st year medical school student.
Throughout my undergrad career the goal of getting to medical school was the motivation behind everything I did. It’s no secret that getting into medical school these days is extremely competitive. It’s no longer enough to just be a good student, and because of that I tried to get as much advice as I could from any one who would offer it about what would set me apart from other medical school applicants. What I found most helpful though, was advice from actual medical school students. That’s where I got the best ideas about which research labs to do research in, what hospitals to volunteer in, and a medical student even gave me the idea to try out for my school’s rowing team. Fortunately for me, all the steps I took to get to this point have paid off. I realize that the hardest part is yet to come, but I feel confident and highly motivated to make the most of the opportunity that lies in front of me.
It wasn’t easy getting to this point, and I imagine that many people interested in this blog are trying to go to medical school as well. Looking back, I feel that there were plenty of resources available online and on campus that prepared me to get to medical school, but I still don’t really have a good idea of what it’s really like to be a medical school. I know to expect a LOT of studying, but other than that I don’t have a good idea of what the day-to-day life of a medical school is like. Therefore, I want to take this opportunity to share my experiences with anyone who wants to know what it’s like to be a medical school student. I want to share my experiences in my classes and labs, but I also want you to get a sense of the other aspects of medical school. I want you all to share in my experiences as I transition from life in southern Cali to life in Philly, maintain a long distance relationship, deal with student loans, and meet new people, deal with stress, and discover all the fun stuff my counselors didn’t really talk about. So I hope you all enjoy my first hand account of life inside medical school. I’m very excited, and I am looking forward to everything this year has to offer. For all the pre-med students, I hope this gives you a better idea of what you’re getting into, and hopefully keeps you motivated to work hard in order to get to medical school. And to everyone else, I hope this blog will give you guys a more balanced and realistic view of the daily life of a 1st year medical student. Enjoy!
